Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate average deal size?
- Divide the revenue of the deals you won by the number of those deals. $450,000 across 30 deals is an average deal size of $15,000.
- Should I use the average or the median?
- Report both if a few very large deals exist. One enterprise deal can double the average and hide that most deals are getting smaller.
- How can I increase deal size?
- Sell to the right size of company, price by value (seats, usage, outcomes), offer packages instead of single products, and avoid discounting before the buyer asks.
- Is average deal size the same as average transaction value?
- They use the same maths: revenue ÷ number of sales. B2B sales teams say average deal size and count won deals; retail and e-commerce say average transaction value (or average order value) and count purchases.
